Punjab: The Amritsar (rural) police have arrested four persons, including a dismissed Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) jawan, in connection with the robbery of dry fruits and grocery items from a cold storage in Ibban Kalan village a week ago. The arrested persons include Thana Singh, a resident of Basti Malasia in Zira, Jaswinder Kumar, a dismissed IRB jawan from Thathi village in Gurdaspur, Parveen Singh, a resident of Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar in Zira and Ravinder Singh, a resident of Adampur. The police have recovered 29 sacks of black pepper, 40 sacks of black gram, 189 boxes of cashew nuts, 30 boxes of cashew nuts, 62 boxes of figs, 47 boxes of raisins, 76 buckets of almonds, five sacks of turmeric and three sacks of dry dates from their possession. Amritsar (rural) SSP Charanjit Singh said that 11 cases have been registered against the main accused Thana under robbery and NDPS Act. He said that one case each has been registered against Jaswinder and Ravinder. The SSP said that the robbery was planned by Thana and Dilsher Singh of Sangna village in Amritsar Central Jail in November last year. Dilsher used to bring dry fruits and grocery items from Majith Mandi to Ibban Kalan Cold Store. He did a recce along with Thana, but Dilsher was not with them during the robbery. A total of 16 people were involved in this crime, out of which 13 had come to the cold storage for the robbery. He said that Parveen has a warehouse, where they had hidden the stolen goods. Police said that some goods have been recovered from Adampur. The truck used in the crime was also stolen. The incident had spread panic among the traders. The traders had claimed that dry fruits and grocery items worth several crores of rupees were looted from the spot. After the incident, Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal and Harbhajan Singh ETO, besides MLA Ajay Gupta, also reached the spot.
