ABS mandatory on two-wheelers in India from January 2026: MoRTH

The two wheeler manufacturers in India will be offering ABS as a standard feature from January 2026. The motorcycle dealerships across India will also offer two BIS-certified helmets with every two-wheeler. One helmet will be for the rider while other will be for the pillion.

According to the latest announcement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), all new two-wheelers that are sold in India from January 2026 will offer with ABS (anti-lock braking system) as standard. Meanwhile, the dealers are expected to offer two BIS-certified helmets with every new vehicle.

As two BIS-certified helmets are offered with a motorcycle/ scooter, this will improve overall safety for the riders. Government data has mentioned that large number of two-wheeler accidents involve brake-related skidding and head injuries. The new rule will improve road safety for average Indians.

The introduction of ABS as standard feature for two-wheelers will be a huge thing in terms of safety for entry level riders. Two-wheeler manufacturers in India like Hero, Honda, TVS, Bajaj and Suzuki do not offer ABS feature under 125cc category.

With the introduction of ABS in the under 125cc category, we can expect a rise in prices of the category.

The ministry is expected to release details guidelines about the rollout very soon.
