A Mix of Heat and Rain in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Meteorological Department has reported that temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 38 degrees Celsius) have been recorded at 13 locations across Tamil Nadu. While intense heat continues to prevail in parts of the state, the possibility of rainfall has been forecast for several other regions.

According to a press release issued by the central authorities on Thursday, a low-pressure area is currently active, extending from South Odisha to the Gulf of Mannar. This weather system is moving across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in certain parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Saturday (May 1) through May 7.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds may occur at one or two isolated places in the districts of the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, and Namakkal on Saturday (May 2). Furthermore, heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Sunday (May 3) in the hilly regions of the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Tiruppur, as well as in the districts of Theni and Dindigul.

Additionally, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning and declared a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Monday (May 4). On this day, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds is likely at one or two isolated places in the Nilgiris, the hilly regions of Coimbatore, and the districts of Erode, Salem, Namakkal, and Trichy.

In the capital city of Chennai and in Puducherry, partly cloudy skies are forecast for Saturday, offering the possibility of some relief from the heat.

The Meteorological Department has also issued a special warning for fishermen. On Saturday, strong winds—reaching speeds of up to 65 kilometers per hour—are expected along the coast of North Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining central Bay of Bengal, which could lead to rough sea conditions. Consequently, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. While the heat continues to prevail in the state, the weather is likely to witness fluctuations due to the possibility of rain and strong winds. The administration has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and adhere to the warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.
