Kerala: Bank loans of Wayanad landslide victims have been waived.

Kerala: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered the waiver of bank loans for those affected by the Wayanad landslide.

The Kerala government will reportedly repay loans worth ₹18.75 crore taken by 555 individuals from various banks.

A massive landslide struck the Mundakkai and Surulamalai areas of Wayanad on July 30, 2024, burying several houses and killing more than 250 people.

Following this devastating incident, the Kerala government, in collaboration with various organizations, has been providing assistance to the affected people for the past year and a half.

The Kerala government will hand over the first phase of newly constructed houses this month to 300 people whose homes were destroyed in the landslide.

In this context, it has been announced that 1,620 loans totaling ₹18.75 crore, taken by 555 people affected by the Wayanad landslide from various banks, will be repaid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Additionally, the state government has also offered to repay the ₹93 lakh in loans already waived by Kerala Bank. The Chief Minister has instructed the Chief Secretary to coordinate with the bank committee to ensure that the credit ratings of the affected individuals are not impacted.
