‘No vacancies for doctors: Difficulty in opening a multi-purpose hospital’

Tamil Nadu: Government doctors have alleged that newly constructed government multi-purpose hospitals in Tamil Nadu are not being used by the public due to a lack of sufficient posts.
In this regard, Dr. S. Perumal Pillai, head of the Legal Campaign Committee for Government Doctors, issued a statement: The Thoothukudi Government Medical College operates in Kamaraj Nagar. Its hospital is located in the city. A large number of outpatients come for treatment every day. In addition, there is a structure for the treatment of 1,200 inpatients.
In this context, a new 7-story hospital has been built in Kamaraj Nagar at a cost of ₹136.35 crore with financial contribution from the central government. Construction of this 687-bed hospital is 95% complete and is ready for the inauguration ceremony.
Work on this hospital was started as a multi-purpose hospital. Now, a government order has been issued to convert it into a high-specialty hospital for maternity and child welfare.
To operationalize the multi-purpose hospital, approximately 65 new positions will need to be created. Health department officials made this change to avoid financial burden on the government.
After the completion of the ₹198 crore Penland Multipurpose Hospital in Vellore, it was converted into a Maternity and Child Welfare Hospital during the inauguration ceremony.
Similarly, due to a shortage of doctors at the Salem Ammapet Government Hospital, eight doctors from the Salem Government Medical College Hospital travel there daily for replacement work.
The situation is similar at the recently opened Tirunelveli Kandiyaperi Government Hospital. 25 doctors and 45 nurses have been transferred from the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital to that hospital.
He said that a proper solution should be found to this issue, more posts of doctors should be created and the multi-purpose hospital should be allowed to function.
