Special arrangement for allotment of lower berths in trains for senior citizens, women and Divyangjan

Raipur/Delhi. Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw told in response to a question in the Lok Sabha that Indian Railways is constantly striving to provide lower berths to senior citizens, women and Divyangjan. Senior citizens, female passengers aged 45 years and above and pregnant women, if seats are available, are automatically allotted lower berths, even if they have not chosen any special option at the time of booking.

  • Special quota of 6 to 7 lower berths in each coach in sleeper class.
  • 4 to 5 lower berths in each coach in air-conditioned 3 tier (3AC).
  • 3 to 4 lower berths in each coach in air-conditioned 2 tier (2AC).
  • This facility is provided according to the number of coaches in the train, so that maximum convenience can be given to the passengers.

Reservation quota for Divyangjan:

  • 4 berths in sleeper class (including 2 lower berths).
  • 4 berths (including 2 lower berths) in 3AC / 3AC Economy class.
  • 4 seats in reserved second seating or air-conditioned chair car.

If lower berths remain vacant during the journey, they are allotted on priority basis to senior citizens, Divyangjan and pregnant women who have been allotted middle or upper berths earlier.

Indian Railways is committed to these inclusive measures to provide convenient and seamless travel experience to passengers. Passengers are encouraged to avail these facilities to ensure safe and comfortable travel.
