Kolkata: Seven people, including a child, were killed after a dumper truck and an e-rickshaw collided on the National Highway near Gurap in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Tuesday.
Six passengers traveling in the e-rickshaw died on the spot, while its driver died in the hospital. The deceased have been identified as Bidyut Bera, his wife Preeti Bera, their three-year-old son Bihan Bera, Ramprasad Das, his wife Nupur Das and a college student named Shreeja Bhattacharya. The name of the e-rickshaw driver is not yet known. Hooghly (Rural) SP Kamanashish Sen said that the driver of the dumper truck has been arrested.
Locals said that immediately after the accident, they tried to save the injured and take them to the hospital. A local resident said, “But all our efforts failed. The injuries were so severe that most of them died before they could be taken to hospital.”
