Hyderabad: In a timely intervention, Chaderghat police rescued five destitute men who were found seeking shelter on a footpath near Malakpet Gunj Market on Wednesday, April 29. The men, who were living in extremely vulnerable conditions without food, shelter, or basic necessities, were immediately shifted to a recognized shelter home, an official said.
According to the police, patrolling staff of Chaderghat Police Station received information regarding the situation and promptly reached the location. On arrival, they found five men — Venu Gopal, aged 46; Narsimha, 60; Krishna, 70; Bharath Chetri, 35; and Anil, 35 — huddled on the footpath, exposed to the harsh conditions of urban street life. The men were in a state of extreme vulnerability, lacking not only food and water but also access to basic support or shelter.
Inspector of Police KB Murari stated that the police immediately intervened, providing assistance on the spot and making arrangements to transfer all five individuals to a recognized shelter home. “The safety and welfare of all citizens, including those who are homeless and destitute, is a priority. The patrolling team acted promptly to ensure they received immediate care and were moved to a safe environment,” he said.
The shelter home, where the men were taken, is equipped to provide basic amenities including food, clothing, and medical assistance. The authorities also plan to provide long-term support, including access to rehabilitation programs, vocational training, and opportunities for reintegration into society.
Officials said that the rescue highlights the ongoing challenges faced by homeless individuals in urban areas like Hyderabad. Lack of permanent housing, limited access to food and medical care, and vulnerability to adverse weather conditions make street life extremely hazardous. Police and social welfare agencies continue to conduct regular patrols and outreach programs to identify and assist individuals living in such conditions.
