Andhra Pradesh: The government has suspended three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, including the Director General (DG), for allegedly arresting and harassing Mumbai-based actress and model Kadambari Jethwani without proper investigation. The decision was taken after an inquiry into their actions attracted widespread public attention. In August, Jethwani met NTR Police Commissioner S.V. Rajashekar Babu and lodged a formal complaint. He accused officials of Congress party leader YSR and filmmaker K.V.R. of colluding with Vidyasagar, who filed a case of forgery and extortion against him in February.
Jethwani alleged that senior police officers conspired with Vidyasagar to harass him and his parents after which he was arrested and transferred from Mumbai to Vijayawada without any prior notice. Jethani alleged that he and his elderly parents were subjected to humiliation and illegal detention, which led to him being in judicial custody for over 40 days. His lawyer N Srinivas alleged that Vidyasagar had forged property documents to defame Jethani’s family and that the police prevented him from applying for bail for several days. The government order detailing Anjaneyulu’s suspension cited “prima facie evidence” of “serious misconduct and dereliction of duty”. The order said: “After careful consideration of the report and taking into account the circumstances of the case, the government has come to the conclusion that there is prima facie evidence and prosecution of him for serious misconduct and dereliction of duty is justified.” Disciplinary action…”
Suspension part
The suspended officers include former intelligence chief P Sitaram Anjaneyulu (Director General rank), former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kranti Rana Tata (Inspector General rank) and former Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishal Gunni (Superintendent rank). Investigations revealed that Anjaneyulu had ordered two other officers to arrest Jethani even before a First Information Report (FIR) was filed.
