3 accused arrested in voter list scam; used to cheat people by posing as NIA officers

Kolkata: Police announced on Sunday that three people have been arrested for financial fraud worth lakhs of rupees by posing as National Investigation Agency (NIA) officers.
They are alleged to have collected money from several people in the name of correcting their documents for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. The Intelligence Department and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Siliguri Police conducted a raid and arrested the three in North Bengal.
According to police sources, the three men used to call ordinary people posing as senior officers of the National Investigation Agency. They allegedly extorted money from several people by threatening them.
A written complaint was filed at the Matigara Police Station in Siliguri against the three men, accusing them of financial fraud.
The Intelligence Department of the Police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate began investigating the case and used various methods to apprehend the accused.
On Saturday, police tracked the mobile locations of the three and caught them red-handed. Police recovered several mobile phones and photocopies of various documents from the arrested individuals. A car was also seized.
Rakesh Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Siliguri Police Commissionerate, said: “The accused used to mislead the public by posing as NIA officers. Following a complaint, all three were arrested. However, there are more people behind this racket. The search is ongoing to nab them.”
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ahsan Ahmed and Rehar Babar, residents of Panjipara; and Manik Roy, a resident of Sewak Road, Siliguri.
According to the police, the three used fake identities as NIA officers and roamed around Siliguri and its surrounding areas, targeting various individuals and allegedly extorting money from them using various methods.
It has also been revealed that the three used their fake identities to mislead many people during the ongoing SIR exercise in the state. It is also alleged that he took lakhs of rupees from many people in the name of getting their documents rectified.
