Punjab: The city police recovered unaccounted cash worth Rs 1 lakh from two persons during a search at a checkpoint near the Golden Gate here late yesterday evening.
Both were identified as Prakashdeep Singh and Gurinder Singh, both residents of village Balongi, Mohali.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Darpan Ahluwalia confirmed the incident and said that both of them could not give satisfactory answers to the police questions. He was stopped at the checkpoint at around 8 pm last night. He was detained under sections 107 and 151 of CrPC and sent to judicial custody.
When the police stopped for checking, the accused were traveling in a Maruti Ciaz car. Upon search, the police recovered the amount, while the occupants could not give satisfactory answers to questions or produce any documents regarding the cash. After this the police seized the cash and also informed the Income Tax Department.
“We have informed the Income Tax Department and other agencies about the recovery of unaccounted cash from the duo. Further investigation is underway,” the ADCP informed.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that an NDPS case is also allegedly registered against him in Mohali.
To maintain constant vigil and security in view of the Lok Sabha elections, the city police along with paramilitary personnel have set up a permanent checkpoint at the Golden Gate entrance here.
