Maharashtra: A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning during the construction of the Sewri-Worli Connector in Mumbai’s Parel area, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old construction worker. The deceased, identified as Ravi Anil Giri, a resident of Nepal, was working as a laborer at the construction site.
The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. near KEM Circle when heavy steel frames were being moved for an infrastructure project being undertaken by Jaikumar Construction Company. According to police, the workers were tasked with moving four heavy steel frames from Acharya Donde Marg to Parel TT.
During the work, two large metal frames were being lifted with the help of a crane. Ravi Giri and another worker were present with the lifted frames, while the remaining two had gone some distance away to retrieve them. The accident suddenly occurred, leading to a serious situation.
Immediately after the incident, panic gripped the site, and other workers shouted for help. Upon receiving information, the concerned construction agency and local police arrived at the scene. Efforts were made to immediately transport the injured worker to the hospital, but due to his severe injuries, Ravi Giri could not be saved and doctors declared him dead.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are trying to determine how the accident occurred and whether safety regulations were followed. The preliminary investigation is also examining whether all safety standards were followed during the crane operation.
Local residents and labor organizations have expressed concern over the incident and demanded further strengthening of safety measures at construction sites. They say that the safety of workers working on large infrastructure projects should be prioritized to prevent such accidents.
This accident once again highlights the importance of worker safety and workplace safety standards in urban construction projects. The administration is expected to conduct a thorough investigation and take action against those responsible.
