17 people died after drinking poisonous alcohol in iran

Iran | At least 17 people have died in Alborz province after drinking spurious liquor in the past 11 days.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA has given this information in its report. The agency quoted Chief Justice of Alborz province, Hossein Fazeli Harikandi, as saying that during this period, about 191 people were taken to various hospitals after their health deteriorated due to drinking poisonous alcohol. Four of them are still admitted to the hospital.

He added that so far provincial police have arrested nine suspects, two of whom were caught in the past two days. He said that those arrested were involved in the production or distribution of toxic liquor by mixing methanol with water and other solutions.

The owner of a hairspray production factory in Esthard County in Alborz was found to be ‘illegally’ selling industrial-grade alcohol, which was used in the production of denatured alcohol, the agency reported.

Last week, local media reported that more than 12 people died in Alborz during the past days after drinking poisoned wine. It is noteworthy that producing, selling and drinking alcoholic beverages is illegal in Iran.
