Punjab: With another seizure of 15 mobile phones from the high security Amritsar Central Jail, the total number of cellphones seized in the first three months of the year has crossed the 300 mark.
According to the information, a total of 306 cellphones have been seized from the jail premises so far.
Yesterday, during a search operation, officials seized 15 mobile phones from 22 prisoners and undertrials. Of the 15 mobile phones, seven were touch capable. Apart from this, the jail authorities also seized 12 SIM cards.
Police registered a case in this regard after the complaint of Assistant Superintendent Jail Mandeep Singh.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Darpan Ahluwalia to investigate the uncontrolled recovery of contraband from the jail premises.
The jail is located in a densely populated area. It is common to throw contraband material from outside the jail premises. Despite several steps being taken, the authorities concerned are facing the challenge of cracking down on those who throw cellphones and other items from outside in the jail premises.
