New Delhi: New Year travel disrupted as 148 flights were cancelled while 150 flights delayed at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) due to fog and poor air quality.
According to reports, the total cancellations count includes 70 departing and 78 arriving flights.
Delhi’s thick fog didn’t only affect air travel but also people travelling on the road.
Even rail traffics were affected due to dense fog shadowing Delhi. Passengers were seen waiting at railway stations in the national capital while train movement remained slow because of the foggy conditions.
Likewise, two flights were diverted at the Delhi’s international airport for the same cause.
Visibility at the airport remained severely restricted in the early hours. At 8.30 AM, general visibility was around 250 metres, while runway visibility ranged between 600 and 1,000 metres, complicating take-offs and landings.
Delhi Airport issued a passenger advisory early Wednesday, urging travellers to stay updated on flight schedules as foggy winter conditions continued to blanket the region.
It is reported that for the next 6 days the air quality of Delhi is expected to be very poor while the pollution levels are likely to shift to ‘severe’ category for next two days before easing back to ‘very poor’ on January 2.
