Shimla. Himachal Pradesh Police is continuously focusing on road safety and reducing road accidents in the state. Due to strong efforts, a significant reduction in road traffic accidents, deaths and injuries has been observed during the year 2023 as compared to the previous year. A total of 2255 accidents, 882 deaths and 3542 injuries were recorded in 2023 compared to 2597 accidents, 1032 deaths and 4063 injuries in 2022.
DIG TTR Gurdev Sharma said that due to these various road safety initiatives, we have been successful in reducing accidents by 13 percent, death rate by 14 percent and injuries by 12 percent in the state during the year 2023 as compared to the year 2022. Himachal Pradesh Police is committed to reduce road traffic accidents and provide safe roads to road users. He said that Himachal Pradesh Police urges the public to follow traffic rules for the safety of everyone.
DIG TTR Gurdev Sharma informed that as a premature decision, the state government has approved three traffic cum tourist police stations for Kiratpur-Manali fourlane national highway. Approval has been given to open one traffic cum tourist police station each in Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu districts. Himachal Police has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu for this. The World Bank has also signed an $82 million financing agreement with the Government of Himachal Pradesh for the Himachal Pradesh State Road Transformation Project with HPPWD to improve traffic flow and road safety on the state’s main road network.
Various road safety measures have been adopted by Himachal Pradesh Police during the last year, such as critical analysis of road accident database, use of technology in enforcement, procurement of latest equipment for traffic monitoring and regulation, identification of accident-prone black spots/stretches, Identification and rectification, construction of crash barriers and creating awareness through community and social media are being done. At the same time, 44 intelligent traffic management systems have been installed in the state.
