Uttarkashi: The Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, which had been closed due to incessant rain and landslides, was reopened for traffic after approximately 32 hours. The reopening of the road has brought significant relief to locals, pilgrims, and travelers. However, the administration has clarified that the risk of landslides along the route has not yet been completely averted, and travelers have been advised to exercise caution.
This route to Yamunotri Dham is a crucial part of Uttarakhand’s Char Dham Yatra circuit. Heavy rains had caused debris and rocks to fall from the hills at several locations, blocking the road and leaving hundreds of travelers and locals stranded on both sides. Upon receiving the information, the administration, police, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and other agencies launched an operation to clear the road.
During the relief and clearance operation, which lasted about 32 hours, debris was removed using JCBs and other heavy machinery. Although the work faced interruptions due to continuous falling rocks at several spots, the teams persisted in their efforts. Eventually, the road was opened for traffic on a single-lane basis.
The administration stated that despite the road reopening, the threat of landslides persists in vulnerable areas. The situation is being closely monitored, especially given the Meteorological Department’s forecast of continued rain in the hilly regions. Travelers have been urged to check the latest weather and road conditions before setting out on their journey.
Local authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and to adhere to administrative guidelines. Police and disaster management teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas to respond immediately to any emergency situation.
Pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra have also been advised to drive at a controlled speed and exercise extra caution on mountain roads. If they receive information about falling rocks or road closures, they should stop at a safe location and await instructions from the administration.
Landslides are a common occurrence during the monsoon season in many hilly areas of Uttarakhand, including Uttarkashi. Consequently, the administration is continuously monitoring vulnerable zones, and traffic may be temporarily halted if the need arises. While the restoration of traffic on the Yamunotri Highway has certainly brought relief, it remains essential to stay vigilant in the coming days due to the threat of continuous rain and landslides.
