World Environment Day celebrated in Nagaland, emphasis on environmental protection

DIMAPUR: Various organisations, institutions and community groups across Nagaland commemorated World Environment Day (WED) on June 5 with tree plantation, cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns and competitions reaffirming commitment to environmental conservation.
KDLSA: In Kohima, the District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) organised a plantation and cleanliness drive along the stretch from KMC Parking, Upper Agri Colony to Kohima Science College Gate, Jotsoma. A highlight of the programme was the participation of Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir, who joined the plantation drive alongside KDLSA members.
A total of 130 saplings including chestnut, guava, wild apple and cherry were planted by KDLSA members and interns from St. Joseph College and Don Bosco College.
PUGHOBOTO: In Pughoboto, the Forest Range Office, in collaboration with the Sub Divisional Planning and Development Board (SDPDB), organised a mass plantation drive and awareness programme. Special guest Dr. Sukhato A. Sema, MLA, and special invitee Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS, DFO Zunheboto, graced the event attended by students, village leaders, civil society organisations, church representatives and government officials.
Highlights included geotagging of planted saplings for monitoring, distribution of mahogany and other saplings to villages, and the signing of a climate action pledge by all attendees committing to reduce energy and water wastage, avoid single use plastics, support renewable energy, and protect ecosystems.
ASU, CSU: Marking World Environment Day, the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) in collaboration with the Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) carried out a social work drive at the ASU Branch Office, Chümoukedima. Officials and volunteers from both unions actively participated in cleaning the office premises and surrounding areas, clearing waste and litter as part of their shared commitment to environmental hygiene and civic responsibility. Speaking on the occasion, Viketouzo Yashü, Environment & Sanitation Secretary of ASU, said World Environment Day should not be confined to speeches alone but reflected in consistent actions. Leaders of both unions expressed appreciation to all officials and volunteers for their participation and reaffirmed their commitment to continue joint initiatives for environmental conservation and a cleaner, healthier Nagaland.
AIDA: AIDA commemorated WED by organized tree plantation programme at its office campus in River Belt Colony, Dimapur, bringing together AIDA staff members, who actively participated in the tree plantation drive.
CYO: Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO), in collaboration with the Divisional Forest Officer and District Agriculture Officer, planted around 500 saplings across 42 villages and 14 colonies.
Dimapur 24/7: Commemorating the day, Dimapur 24/7 organized plantation and distribution drive, under the leadership of its Chairperson, Annie Jain.
HRHAN: Human Rights Help Association Nagaland (HRHAN) launched a “No Use Plastic” campaign at Dimapur Market to raise awareness on plastic pollution.
C-CERP: In Peren, the Care Centre for Environment and Rural Poor (C CERP), supported by the District Forest Department, collaborated with Mhainamtsi Village Council conducted plantation drives along NH 129A and organised cleanliness and waste management awareness programmes.
FAC: In Mokokchung, Fazl Ali College (FAC) observed the day with NSS and Eco Club members through a plantation drive within the college campus.
NPF Mokokchung: NPF Mokokchung Division also carried out a plantation drive along the Mokokchung–Tuensang Highway, covering a 20 km stretch and culminated at Dikhu River.
KDLSA: In Kohima, the Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) organised a plantation and cleanliness drive from KMC Parking, Upper Agri Colony to Kohima Science College Gate, joined by Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir.
KMC: Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) conducted a plantation drive at the Solid Waste Management Plant, Lerie, as part of a weeklong observance under the theme “A Global Call for Climate Action.”
LEMSACHENLOK: LEMSACHENLOK, in collaboration with Longleng Forest Division and HĂĽkphang Village Council, brought together officials, researchers, academicians and community leaders to reaffirm commitment to biodiversity conservation.
NEISSR: North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), ChĂĽmoukedima, observed WED with NSS, NCC and Green Club members promoting sustainable practices.
NPF Minority Wing: NPF Central Minority Wing organised plantation and cleanliness drives at Dimapur and Ramakrishna Society Complex, Duncan.
CFL Sitimi: Centre for Financial Literacy (CFL) Sitimi, in collaboration with PHED Kiphire and local clubs, conducted sanitation and plantation drives at Tethuyo village.
SZSU: Sechü Zubza Students’ Union (SZSU), along with SZCCI and Don Bosco HSS, held a drive under the theme “Clean Streets, Green Roots” with 170 participants including students, CRPF personnel and community members. Activities included plastic clean up, installation of dustbins and tree plantation.
NU Medziphema: At Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS) observed WED under the nationwide “Plant4Mother” campaign, planting saplings at designated campus locations.
