Women’s Commission’s Reaction to Allegations Against Utpal Datta

Assam: Angoorlata Deka, Chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Women, has responded to the allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against National Award-winning film critic Utpal Datta.
In an exclusive conversation with India Today NE, Deka stated that filmmaker Rozy Bora—who earlier this year publicly accused Datta of making her feel uncomfortable during a private gathering—had contacted the Commission on the very day her video surfaced online. Deka said, “She has spoken to us, and we are in the process of confirming whether the case will be formally registered tonight. If everything goes smoothly, the case will be registered tomorrow.”
The Chairperson further added that the Commission is also prepared to assist other women who have faced similar experiences. She stated, “Any girl or woman who has faced harassment or misconduct can contact us. We are always ready to extend our support. Our helpline number is available for assistance at any time.”
Rozy Bora had alleged that Datta—who currently serves as an Honorary Faculty member at Assam Down Town University—had behaved inappropriately with her during a private gathering earlier this year, an accusation that sparked a public debate under the ambit of the ‘Me Too’ movement. Following Bora’s statement, other women have also come forward to share their own experiences of alleged misconduct by Datta.
