What Happens If We Stop Taking Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. They provide the energy needed to perform daily tasks. When consumed, they are first broken down in the digestive tract and converted into glucose and then into the blood. This is called blood sugar. The body then releases insulin and transports that glucose to the cells and uses it as energy. The liver stores the excess glucose in the muscles and liver. When they are full, the remaining glucose is converted into fat. Therefore, consuming too much carbohydrates increases blood sugar and causes fat storage. For these reasons, many people are trying to reduce carbs. However, completely eliminating carbs or consuming too little can have negative effects on health. The body switches from relying on instant glucose to using fat as energy. Although this change has some benefits, doctors say that some side effects may also occur.

Glycogen is the body’s energy storage.

Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles in the form of glycogen. About three grams of water are also stored with each gram of glycogen. When carbs are reduced, these reserves decrease in one to two days. This makes it seem like weight loss is rapid at first. But this is due to water loss. There is a risk of dehydration due to water deficiency. Energy also decreases at this stage. After glycogen reserves are reduced, the body starts producing ketones from fat. This is called ketosis. At this stage, the body uses fat as its main energy source. This helps in weight loss. However, initially, symptoms called keto flu appear. Problems like fatigue, constipation, and insomnia occur. The brain uses more glucose. But when carbs are reduced, symptoms like lack of concentration, forgetfulness, and irritability appear in the first week. This is called brain fog. However, after two weeks, the body learns to use ketones properly. This improves brain function again.

These problems are likely to occur.

Reducing carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable. Insulin sensitivity improves. This reduces appetite and cravings for sweets. This helps reduce the risk of diabetes in the long run. However, due to the reduction in glycogen, water and electrolytes are also reduced. This can lead to muscle pain, cramping, and cramps. These problems are especially common at night or during exercise. That is why it is necessary to eat foods rich in potassium and magnesium. Reducing carbs reduces insulin levels and provides some relief from problems like PCOS. However, reducing carbs too much at once can increase cortisol and increase stress. This can lead to hair loss and sleep problems. Thyroid function can also slow down. Although reducing carbohydrates is good, experts suggest that consuming them in a balanced manner is better for health than completely avoiding them.
