Warning issued to lay siege to Minister D.K. Prabhu’s residence in protest against a private mine.
Karaikudi: The agitation by local residents against the approval of a proposed private stone quarry in Kulavaipatti village, Pudukkottai district, has taken a new turn. Protesters announced plans to lay siege to the Karaikudi residence of State Government Minister D.K. Prabhu, prompting the district police administration to go on high alert. Security at the minister’s home and offices was stepped up to avert any untoward incidents, while extensive police arrangements were made on major routes leading to Karaikudi.
Following the announcement of the protest on Saturday, special security preparations were made in Karaikudi. The district police deployed additional forces around Minister D.K. Prabhu’s residence and offices on Mudiyarasan Road. Officers were instructed to maintain constant surveillance over sensitive areas and uphold law and order.
According to police officials, there was a possibility that a large number of agitators might arrive in Karaikudi to besiege the minister’s residence. In light of this, additional police personnel were summoned from neighboring areas. Barricades were erected around the minister’s home, and the movement of people was monitored to preempt any disorder or security threats.
Special vigilance was maintained on routes coming from the Thirumayam area to prevent protesters from entering Karaikudi. The Nemathanpatti police check-post was designated as a key security hub, with approximately 50 police personnel deployed there. All vehicles passing through were subjected to thorough checks. By inspecting private vehicles, buses, and other modes of transport, the police sought to ensure that large groups of protesters could not enter Karaikudi.
The police administration stated that the objective of the security arrangements was solely to maintain law and order and prevent any potential confrontation. Officials emphasized that while people have the right to express their views peacefully, no form of violence, forced siege, or disruption of public order would be permitted. Locals allege that the proposed private mine in Kulavaipatti will have an adverse impact on the environment. They argue that the commencement of mining operations could affect groundwater levels, damage agriculture, and harm the health and lives of nearby residents due to dust and blasting. Villagers also claim that their objections and concerns regarding the project were not given adequate consideration.
In light of this issue, villagers and various social organizations had announced plans to lay siege to the residence of Minister D.K. Prabhu. They maintain that the government should respect the views of the local people and reconsider the project. The protesters demand a stay on the permission granted for the private mine until an impartial review of all environmental and social aspects is conducted.
Meanwhile, the police administration has appealed to the public to maintain peace and abide by the law. Officials stated that anyone with objections to the project could voice them through established legal and administrative channels. Necessary action would be taken against any attempt to disrupt law and order.
As part of security measures, police patrols were intensified on several key routes in Karaikudi. Sensitive areas were kept under constant surveillance, and senior officials personally monitored the situation.
