Walkathon organized to mark 175 years of Geological Survey of India

Raipur: Geological Survey of India (GSI), established in 1851, celebrated its 175th Foundation Day on March 2, 2025 with grand events at its state unit office in Raipur. One of the oldest scientific organizations in India, GSI has played a vital role in geological research, mineral exploration and disaster studies. In its illustrious history, GSI has contributed significantly to the industrial development of India by discovering important mineral resources such as coal, iron ore and copper.

Chhattisgarh, a mineral rich state, plays a vital role in securing the mineral supply of the country by providing significant deposits of tin ore, bauxite, iron ore, coal and other minerals. The state unit of GSI in Chhattisgarh has facilitated the auction of several high value mineral blocks, including India’s first lithium block. These unprecedented discoveries are laying the foundation for industrial expansion and technological advancement.

The event was inaugurated by Deputy Director General, Amit Dharwadkar on 2 March with a walkathon on the theme “Geology for a Safer World” aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of geoscience in global sustainability. The event was co-sponsored by M/s Ashtadhatu Ferro Metals Pvt. Ltd., Geosolutions Pvt. Ltd., United Exploration Pvt. Ltd., Chhattisgarh Rajya Gramin Bank and Siddharth Geo Consultants India Ltd. Around 100 participants took part in the 3 km walkathon which started from the GSI office premises. The event was attended by GSI employees and their family members, retired GSI employees, postgraduate geology students from nearby institutions and local people. The event emphasized on community participation and creating awareness about geoscience.
