Violence breaks out between two groups in Honduran women’s prison, 41 inmates killed

tegucigalpa | Tegucigalpa At least 41 female inmates have been reported killed in a gang war at a women’s prison in the Central American country of Honduras. Reports emerged of inmates being shot at Tamara Prison, about 30 miles northwest of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

Yuri Mora, spokesman for Honduras’ National Police Investigation Agency, said most of the victims were burned, while others were shot. According to media reports, at least seven female inmates were admitted to the Tegucigalpa hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting and stabbing.

Riot occurred due to stopping illegal activities inside the jail
The head of the country’s prison system, Julisa Villanueva, said the rioting was triggered by recent efforts by authorities to crack down on illegal activities inside prisons. Because of this there was violence in the jail on Tuesday. He said that steps are being taken against organized gangs in the jail.

According to US media, Honduras’ national women’s prison holds about 800 inmates, more than double its capacity. In 2020, several violent incidents took place in the Honduras prison.
