Victims of tragic incidents should get government jobs: Thol. Thirumavalavan

Chennai: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief and senior leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has said that it is an appropriate step from the government to provide government jobs as relief to the families affected by any tragic accident or violent incident. He said that such cases should not be linked to any political party or programme, but priority should be given to the livelihood and future security of the victim families.
On Friday, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President P. Manickam Thakur visited Thol in Velachery, Chennai. Courtesy visit at Thirumavalavan’s residence. This was his first formal meeting after assuming the post of Tamil Nadu Congress President. Various issues related to the political situation of the state, strength of the alliance and public interest were discussed between the two leaders.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Thirumavalavan said that his party Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is part of the opposition alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and all allies are working together to strengthen the alliance. He clarified that there is no conflict or difference of opinion with any of the allies within the alliance.
Referring to the recent tragic incidents during public events, Thirumavalavan said that if a person dies in an accident or violence, the responsibility of the government should not be limited to giving only financial compensation. He said that to secure the livelihood of such families, serious consideration should be given to giving a government job to the eligible member of the family.
He said that such incidents should not be seen from a political point of view. Whether the incident occurs due to a political gathering, public event, accident or any other reason, if a family loses its earning member then the government should take concrete steps for its rehabilitation.
The VCK chief said his party has been demanding for a long time that proper compensation and employment be provided to the families of those who lose their lives in accidents, violent incidents or other abnormal circumstances. He believes that only one-time financial assistance does not provide permanent solution to the family’s problems, whereas getting a government job can provide long-term financial security to the affected family.
He said that in recent times the question has also been raised whether the families of those who lost their lives in public meetings or political programs should be given government jobs. On this he said that the government should not see this issue as a program of any particular party. The aim of the government should be to help the victim’s family and protect their livelihood.
Thirumavalavan suggested that the Tamil Nadu government should make a clear and permanent policy of providing government jobs to affected families in such circumstances. He said that if the government develops a regular system in this direction, then the families affected by any tragic incident in future will be able to get timely relief and they will not have to face economic insecurity.
He also said that this type of assistance is very important for the weak and financially dependent families of the society. Many times the only earning member of the family becomes a victim of an accident or violence, due to which the entire family comes into trouble. At such times, assistance like a government job can play an important role in getting their lives back on track.
Responding to a question on political alliance, Thirumavalavan said that the opposition alliance is completely united and all the allies are working in mutual coordination. Rejecting reports of any kind of differences or disputes, he said that the aim of all the parties in the alliance is to effectively raise public issues and protect democratic values.
This statement of Thirumavalavan is being seen as an important suggestion related to social security and rehabilitation. He says that the government, adopting a humanitarian approach in such incidents, should not be limited to just compensation, but should also give priority to schemes like employment to provide permanent economic support to the affected families.
