Union Minister Nisith Pramanik gets anticipatory bail in attempt to murder case

The Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Union Minister of State for Home Nisith Pramanik in the attempt to murder case registered against him in 2018.

A division bench of Justices Chitta Ranjan Dash and Partha Sarathi Sen also directed him to surrender before the lower court within a fortnight.

Pramanik moved the Circuit Bench on the directions of the Supreme Court, before which he had earlier filed a prayer for protection.

The division bench directed him to cooperate with the investigators in the case.

A case of attempt to murder was registered against Pramanik at Dinhata police station in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district in 2018 after a group of people allegedly fired at several workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress. One person was reportedly injured in the firing.

The trial court had issued a warrant against Pramanik in connection with the case, following which he had filed an anticipatory bail plea before the circuit bench.

After the High Court adjourned the hearing till January 22 without granting him interim protection, the minister had moved the Supreme Court seeking the same.

The top court had asked the West Bengal Police not to take any coercive action against Pramanik in connection with the case and directed the high court to hear his anticipatory bail plea.

Pramanik’s counsel claimed before the bench that a false case of his involvement in the incident was registered against the minister for political reasons.

Pramanik, who was earlier in TMC, had joined BJP in February 2019. He had contested parliamentary elections in 2019 on BJP ticket and won the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat.
