Uninterrupted power supply in summer: Electricity board to improve infrastructure

Tamil Nadu: The Electricity Board is carrying out various infrastructure works to ensure uninterrupted power supply and prevent power outages in Chennai during the summer season.
Chennai’s daily electricity demand is 3,300 MW. During the summer months (April to June), this demand increases to 4,800 to 5,000 MW. To ensure uninterrupted power supply to the city and surrounding areas, several new substations have been constructed in the Chennai area. Additionally, the Electricity Board is carrying out various infrastructure improvements, including increasing transformer capacity at several substations.
Electricity Distribution Corporation officials stated: In Chennai, electricity demand is increasing in areas with high commercial activity, including Anna Salai, and in industrial areas, including Manali, Meenjur, Kolathur, Ambattur, and Avadi. To meet this demand, seven new substations with additional power handling capacity have been constructed.
Nineteen new transformers have been installed at existing substations to handle the additional power. Two new substations each have been built in Mundakanni Amman in Mylapore, Ganesh Nagar in Kolathur, and Paruthipattu near Avadi.
New substations have also been built in Ganesh Nagar, Mathur, Ennore, Madhavaram, Kodungaiyur, Athipattu, and Almathi.
In addition, 1,360 distribution transformers have been installed to identify and address low voltage problems in northern Chennai. Additionally, 868 km of high-voltage underground cables and 596 km of low-voltage underground cables have been laid.
More than 5,000 old and damaged power poles have been replaced, and 445 km of damaged electrical conductors have been replaced. This will ensure uninterrupted power supply during the summer, he said.
