Two-storey building collapses in Byculla West; major tragedy averted.

Maharashtra: A major accident was averted in Mumbai’s Byculla West area on Friday night when a portion of a vacant two-story building suddenly collapsed during demolition work. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
The incident occurred during a demolition operation being carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). According to reports, the building had already been vacated, and demolition work was underway. During the process, a section of the second floor suddenly broke off and fell onto the first floor, causing panic at the site.
According to the BMC’s Disaster Management Cell, the incident took place around 9:30 PM in the Sundar Galli area near Dagdi Chawl. Workers and staff were present at the site, but everyone was moved to a safe distance in time, averting a major tragedy.
Eyewitnesses reported that dust and debris spread across the surrounding area immediately after the collapse, creating a brief atmosphere of panic. Locals promptly informed the concerned authorities; subsequently, relief and rescue teams arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
Officials stated that the building was already in a dilapidated state and was being demolished for safety reasons. Despite precautions taken during the demolition, the structure’s inherent weakness caused the section to collapse unexpectedly.
Following the incident, the area was cordoned off for safety, and the movement of people in the vicinity was temporarily halted. Debris removal operations have commenced to clear the road and the surrounding area as quickly as possible.
Local authorities have stated that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine if there were any technical or safety lapses during the demolition process. Action will be taken against those found responsible if any negligence is detected.
Incidents of this nature in densely populated areas like Byculla are a cause for concern. Although no loss of life occurred, this incident once again highlights the importance of safety standards during the demolition of dilapidated buildings in urban areas.
The situation is currently under control, and the administration has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent any hazardous situations in the future.
