Tough fight in Panihati seat, BJP candidate Ratna Debnath leading

West Bengal: Initial vote counting trends in the Panihati Assembly constituency in West Bengal are revealing a significant political shift. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ratna Debnath, the mother of the victim in the RG Kar rape and murder case, is leading. This election has heightened the emotional and political atmosphere in the region.

The Panihati seat falls in the North 24 Parganas district and has long been a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Since 2011, TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh has held sway here. However, this election appears to be shifting political dynamics.

Ratna Debnath decided to contest this election, raising questions about women’s safety and the administrative system. The protests and anger that erupted across the state following the RG Kar case have made this election even more sensitive.

The contest in this seat is a triangular and multi-cornered one, with BJP’s Ratna Debnath contesting against Tirthankar Ghosh of the TMC, CPI(M)’s Kalatan Dasgupta, and independent candidate Sadhana Chakraborty. A close contest is being witnessed between all the candidates, but early trends indicate Ratna Debnath’s lead remains a topic of discussion.

During the election campaign on April 8, Ratna Debnath directly targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She questioned why her daughter had not received justice despite being the Chief Minister and then Health Minister of the state. In an emotional statement to ANI, she stated that her main fight was against Mamata Banerjee.

She also stated that she would continue symbolic protests until justice was served and even said that she would not comb her hair until her daughter received justice. This statement created an emotional atmosphere in the election.

The election campaign in Panihati witnessed massive crowds and support. Ratna Debnath claimed that the public was with her and wanted change. The TMC also made every effort to maintain its hold.

According to political analysts, this election is no longer just a political contest, but has become an emotional and social issue. The public outrage following the RG tax case is clearly visible in the voting in this constituency.

Although the counting of votes is not yet complete and the final results are yet to be announced, Ratna Debnath’s lead in the initial trends has sparked new discussions in West Bengal politics.

All eyes are now on the final results, which will determine who the public supports in the Panihati seat and whether this trend will bring about a major change in the state’s politics.
