Tiwa organizations stage blockade National highway at Nellie

JAGIROAD: Activists of All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU), All Tiwa Women Association (ATWA) and Tiwa Cultural Society on Monday blocked the national highway at Nellie. The associations demanded inclusion of the Tiwa Autonomous Council under the Constitution’s 6th schedule, stoppage of expansion of capital area towards Jagiroad, recognition of Tiwas living in Meghalaya as ST, constitution of Anchalik Parishad for the Tiwas living in Karbi Anglong, formation of Schedule Tribes constituencies in the middle Assam and to check price rise of essential commodities. The protesters were later on arrested by Nellie police. The associations however threatened of rigorous movement if the demands are not fulfilled at an early date.
