Tickets of Several TMC MLAs in Murshidabad at Risk

Berhampore: More than seven MLAs belonging to the ruling Trinamool Congress from the Murshidabad district could be dropped. Notably, the total number of MLAs in the district stands at 22; in the 2021 Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress won 20 seats, while the BJP secured 2. TMC insiders have indicated that this time around, Monirul Islam—the Trinamool Congress MLA from Farakka—could be dropped in 2025 due to his controversial activities surrounding the SIR issue and the violence in Shamsherganj. This comes despite the fact that the TMC had trailed by a margin of over 10,000 votes in that constituency. On the other hand, the names of TMC MLA Zakir Hossain from Jangipur, MLA Bayron Biswas from Sagardighi, and TMC MLA Abdur Razzak from Jalangi are still under consideration for inclusion in the final list of candidates.
Meanwhile, the incumbent MLA from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir, has been suspended from the party, while the MLA from the Burwan Assembly constituency, Jiban Krishna Saha, remains in ED custody in connection with the teacher recruitment scam. Kanai Mondal, the three-time incumbent MLA from Nabagram, could also be dropped due to his rebellious activities. Similarly, Rabiul Alam Chowdhury—the three-time incumbent MLA from the Raninagar Assembly constituency—could face removal for failing to effectively counter Humayun Kabir. The TMC may field the National Award-winning teacher, Babar Ali, as its candidate for this prestigious seat. In Bharatpur, Safiul Alam Khan (alias ‘Banu’), and in the Burwan Assembly constituency, Pratima Rajak—both of whom are former Congress MLAs—may be awarded party tickets.
