Three-month self-defense training for girl students in Tamil Nadu government schools

Tamil Nadu: The government has announced a significant initiative for girl students studying in government schools. Under this initiative, girls from grades 6 to 10 will receive three months of self-defense training in martial arts such as karate, judo, taekwondo, and silambam. The training will begin in the first week of August and aims to equip girls with self-defense skills.
The State Project Directorate of Integrated School Education has released detailed guidelines for this program. According to this plan, girls studying in government middle schools (grades 6 to 8) and government higher secondary schools (grades 6 to 10) will receive this training during the current academic year. This program specifically focuses on enhancing the safety and self-confidence of girls.
According to government guidelines, a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 100 girl students will be enrolled in this training program in each school. The training period is set for three months, and martial arts classes will be held regularly during this period. Breathing exercises, physical exercises, and meditation have also been incorporated into the training, ensuring both physical and mental development of the students.
A total of 24 training courses will be conducted under this scheme, divided into eight parts each month. The aim is to provide a systematic and phased approach to ensure that the students are taught skills in a better manner.
The government has also allocated financial assistance for this program. Each school will receive ₹12,000 for three months of training. This funding will be used for training materials, organization, and other necessary arrangements.
In addition, clear rules have been established for the appointment of martial arts instructors. The monthly salary of instructors has been fixed at ₹4,000. It has also been made mandatory to obtain a clean chit report from the relevant police station before appointing instructors, ensuring full compliance with safety standards.
The Education Department states that this initiative will not only prepare female students for self-defense but also foster self-confidence, discipline, and physical fitness. This program is considered particularly important for school-age girls from a safety perspective.
The martial arts training includes karate, judo, taekwondo, and traditional silambam, which will not only help build physical strength but also teach quick reaction and self-defense techniques. In addition, yoga and meditation will also focus on mental balance and concentration.
This program will be implemented in various schools across the state in a phased manner and will be monitored by the relevant education officials. The department believes that such initiatives will increase safety awareness among female students and enable them to protect themselves in any challenging situation.
Preparations for this program have begun in schools, and the process of appointing instructors and forming batches will soon be completed. The Education Department hopes that this program will play a vital role in the overall development of female students.
