Three MLAs who joined TDP gave clarification to the Speaker

Tamil Nadu: Amidst the ongoing controversy over defection in politics, the case of MLAs who left the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and joined the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has taken a new turn. Three of the four MLAs who left the party met Assembly Speaker J.C.T. Prabhakar on Thursday and submitted written explanations. The fourth, Isakki Subbiah, did not appear before the Speaker.
It is noteworthy that the four MLAs, elected from Tarapuram, Madhurantakam, Perundurai, and Ambasamudram assembly constituencies, had previously won the assembly elections on AIADMK tickets. They later resigned from the party and joined the TVK. These developments have intensified the debate regarding defection and the anti-defection law in state politics.
The four MLAs had submitted their resignations in writing to the Speaker of the Assembly, who then announced that their resignations had been accepted. However, the AIADMK expressed serious objection to this decision and decided to challenge it legally.
The AIADMK alleged that the MLAs in question had violated the party whip and that their actions fell within the provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution (the anti-defection law). Based on this, the party filed a formal complaint with the Assembly Speaker, demanding action against them.
The AIADMK also approached the Chennai High Court, challenging the Speaker’s action regarding the resignations. The party stated that the resignations and joining another party are not merely a matter of resignation, but also of the anti-defection law. Therefore, legal action should be taken.
Taking cognizance of the AIADMK’s complaint, the Assembly Speaker had already announced preliminary action against the MLAs in question. The Speaker’s office had issued notices to the four MLAs, seeking their responses.
As part of this process, Tarapuram MLA Satyabhama, Madhuranthakam MLA Maragatham Kumaravel, and Perundurai MLA Jayakumar met with Assembly Speaker J.C.T. Prabhakar on Thursday. All three MLAs submitted written explanations and filed their replies in the matter.
According to sources, the Speaker has taken the documents and explanations submitted by the MLAs into the record. These responses will now be examined, and further action will be decided accordingly.
Meanwhile, Ambasamudram MLA Isakki Subbaiah did not meet with the Speaker on Thursday. His absence has sparked speculation in political circles about the next steps in his case. It is unclear whether he provided any reason for his absence.
Political experts believe that this matter is not limited to the resignations of the four MLAs, but also concerns the interpretation and effective implementation of the anti-defection law in Tamil Nadu politics. If the Speaker of the Assembly makes a significant decision in this matter, it could impact the hearing of such cases in the future.
The AIADMK has consistently maintained that action should be taken against MLAs who leave their party and join another political party under the provisions of the Constitution. Meanwhile, the concerned MLAs are arguing that their resignations and political decisions are legitimate.
All eyes are now on the Speaker of the Assembly’s next action. The Speaker will have to consider all aspects, including the explanations provided by the MLAs, the AIADMK’s complaint, and the pending court case. Only then will it be clear what further steps will be taken under the anti-defection law.
At present, the matter has reached a new stage with three MLAs appearing before the Speaker and submitting written explanations, while the absence of the fourth MLA has sparked new discussions at both the political and legal levels. In the coming days, the Speaker and the court’s actions will determine the course of this entire development.
