There is no place for violence in democracy in Odisha, says Nikunj Bihari Dhal

Bhubaneswar: A day after ordering the deployment of 20 CAPF companies in Ganjam in the wake of pre-poll violence in Khallikote, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nikunj Bihari Dhall on Friday held talks with political parties to ensure peaceful polling in the next elections. During the meeting, which was attended by leaders of major political parties, the CEO reiterated that there is no room for violence in a democracy and any law and order situation will not be tolerated during the elections.

He appealed to political parties to be part of a free, fair, impartial and peaceful election process. The CEO expressed satisfaction over the 75.68 per cent turnout in the first phase of elections for four Lok Sabha and 28 assembly constituencies in the state and urged all stakeholders to work towards ensuring maximum turnout in the next three phases of elections. He asked political parties to nominate women agents for ‘all women’ or ‘Sakhi’ booths during elections. Dhall also urged political parties and their candidates to ensure proper compliance of the model code of conduct issued for the elections.
