The Tamil Nadu Congress reiterated its opposition to the Mekedatu dam project.

Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu: Rajya Sabha member Praveen Chakraborty has said that the Tamil Nadu Congress party will continue to strongly oppose any attempt by Karnataka to build a dam at Mekedatu on the Cauvery river. He also said that this issue is directly related to the farmers and water rights of Tamil Nadu, so protecting the interests of the state is his priority.

On Friday, Praveen Chakraborty paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Kamaraj by garlanding the statue near Madras Gymkhana Club located in Anna Salai in Chennai. After this, while talking to the media, he expressed his views on many political and regional issues.

He said he has been elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Congress and DMK alliance and will strongly raise the issues of the state in Parliament. Accusing the central government, he said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts are being made to push bills like ‘one country, one election’ and delimitation.

Praveen Chakraborty claimed that through these proposals, attempts are being made to influence the political balance in some states. Referring specifically to West Bengal and Punjab, he said that efforts are being made to influence the political conditions there, due to which an attempt may be made to create a special kind of majority in the Parliament. He said that any such attempt should be opposed democratically.

He also said that the Tamil Nadu Congress Party is fully committed to protecting the interests of the state and will continue to raise its voice in favor of the rights of the farmers of the state in the Cauvery water dispute. Referring to the Mekedatu Dam project, he reiterated that this project can affect the water rights of Tamil Nadu, hence opposition to it is necessary.

Praveen Chakraborty said that the Cauvery water dispute has been going on for a long time and any new dam or project could affect the state’s water share. He appealed to the Center and the concerned states to find a balanced solution to the issue keeping in mind the interests of all parties.

He also said that he will strongly raise the voice of the people of Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha and will continue to be active on issues related to the interests of farmers and the state.

After this statement, the discussion regarding the Cauvery water dispute and the policies of the Central Government has once again intensified in the state politics.
