The person sitting behind the wheel died in a road accident in Tehatta, Nadia

A 20-year-old man died in a road accident at Tehatta in Nadia on Friday night while he was cycling with two other friends and streamed live footage on Facebook.

About 50 seconds of live photos showing the tragic end were published on his Facebook wall.

Police said the victim, Nirmal Bairagya, collapsed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle near Betai on the Krishnanagar-Karimpur highway.

The three friends were taken to Tehatta Sub-Divisional Hospital, where Nirmal was brought dead.
Two other motorcyclists suffered multiple injuries and one of them was later taken to a hospital in Kolkata. No one was wearing a helmet.

Police said that on Friday night, Nirmal, a resident of Jeetpur, Tehatta, was going towards Betai with his two other friends. Nirmal was a passenger and broadcast live on Facebook. But the young man riding a bicycle near Betai Bazaar did not realize that a cyclist was crossing the road and hit him. All three fell on the ground.

“Nirmal had serious head injuries and was bleeding. He died on the way to the hospital, police said.

A police officer said that youth often risk their lives for a few moments of fame on social media.

In a similar incident in Shamserganj in Murshidabad in 2018, a teenager was killed when he was traveling as a passenger to livestream his journey on Facebook.

18-year-old Zeeshan Shaikh died when a truck hit his motorcycle and threw the college student onto the road. Zishan died on the spot. His friend, 18-year-old Amirul Islam, who was driving the motorcycle, also fell on the road and sustained serious injuries.

In 2020, 24-year-old Chanchal Dhibar died under similar circumstances in Ukhra, West Burdwan.

An employee of a private hospital in Durgapur was returning to Dhibar.
He was returning home from work when he lost control of the bike while live streaming his ride on Facebook. Dhibar fell to the ground and was seriously injured.

A police officer urged people not to talk on mobile phones or use any social media platforms while driving.
