The MP sought support from the central government to boost industries in Manipur

Imphal: Rajya Sabha MP and the titular king of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba, has urged the Indian government to establish Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the state, focusing on the electronics, electrical, and garment industries.

According to him, PSUs in the electronics, electrical, and garment sectors are crucial for promoting self-reliance and enhancing industrial capacity in the northeastern states, particularly Manipur.

Key requirements for these sectors include establishing robust local supply chains to reduce dependence on imports, acquiring high-value manufacturing capabilities, and adopting advanced technologies.

Leishemba Sanajaoba, a BJP MP from Manipur, raised this demand during the Zero Hour of the Parliament session on Friday, pointing out that Manipur is a small state with a population of approximately 3 million.

Stating that Manipur lacks any major industrial corporate houses except for a few small enterprises, he said that the establishment of PSUs would help address the existing problems of educated unemployed youth to some extent.

“According to the 2011 census, Manipur has a literacy rate of 76.94 percent, while the unemployment rate in the state is 4.7 percent, which is higher than the national average of 3.2 percent,” Sanajaoba said, adding that many educated young people in Manipur are unemployed.

He expressed hope that establishing various PSUs in Manipur would help alleviate the unemployment problem to some extent and urged the government to set up electronics, electrical, and garment PSUs in the state.

He also stated that the establishment of these PSUs would boost the state’s economy and help prevent young people from falling into drug addiction and criminal activities.
