Tesla aims to increase sales of Model Y, announces Rs 2 lakh discount in India

Tesla has announced a discount of Rs 2 lakh for it’s Model Y EV in the Indian market. The US-based EV maker aims to off set the low sales record with the discount in the market.

Despite, the initial craze about the EV, it failed to meet the sales expectations as nearly a third of the vehicles imported last year are yet to be sold in the country. The EV maker is struggling to sell the Model Y.

According to media reports, out of the initial batch of 300 units, around 100 units are yet to find buyers. Hence, to clear its inventory, the carmaker is offering a discount of up to Rs 2 lakh on select variants.

The Tesla Model Y is available in two variants: RWD and Long Range RWD, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. As it is a CBU, the EV attracts an import duty of 110%, which puts it at a big disadvantage compared to rivals.

This clearly reflects in the sales. In 2025, Tesla sold just 227 units of Model Y. It faces tough competition from locally assembled models like the BMW iX1 and BYD Sealion 7. BMW’s EV sales surged 200% to 3,700 units, whereas BYD posted 88% growth with 5,400 units sold.
