TD confused about BJP’s Uniform Civil Code plan

Vijayawada: Telugu Desam’s troubles regarding implementation of Uniform Civil Code will increase as it is in alliance with BJP and Jana Sena in the upcoming elections in Andhra Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday released BJP’s manifesto ‘Sankalp Patra’ with mention of UCC. Although the issue of UCC has been around for many years, regional parties like Telugu Desam are not in favor of it. They are wary of losing the support of Muslims in this context.

It remains to be seen how the TD leadership will react to the UCC and BJP’s plan to make it a law. Once the Parliament makes such a law, there will be uniform law for all people throughout the country without discriminating on caste, community, religion, region, language etc.
The TD leadership is now maintaining silence on this issue. There appears to be a gag order within the party, asking its leaders not to express independent views on the issue.

TDP spokesperson Pilli Manikyala Rao said, “Our party leadership will take a decision on UCC soon. Apart from this, no decision will be taken on this till the elections are over.
Uniform Civil Code means that in issues like adoption, marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance etc. all sections of people are treated equally as per National Civil Code irrespective of their caste, community, religion and region Will go.
BJP claims that UCC is part of its ideology in which nation comes first while religion comes second and the individual will be last.
State BJP election coordinator P. Chandra Shekhar said, “Though we have a uniform criminal code, we do not have a uniform civil code and it is important to have ‘one nation and one law’ for all issues.”
