Tamil Nadu: Strict action against omni buses during elections, warning of action against charging excess fare

Tamil Nadu: Ahead of the Assembly elections, the Transport Department has issued a strict warning against overcharging passengers by omnibuses. The department has clearly stated that strict action will be taken against any bus operator found charging more than the prescribed fare during the election holidays.

A press release issued by the Transport and Road Safety Commission stated that the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled for Thursday (April 23). A large number of people will be traveling to their hometowns to vote. Demand for omnibus services is expected to increase, and fare control is being monitored closely.

The department stated that special teams comprising District Transport Officers, Motor Vehicle Inspectors, and Traffic Checkpost Inspectors have been formed across the state. These teams have been instructed to regularly inspect omnibuses operating on various routes and ensure that passengers are not overcharged.

The press release also clarified that if any bus operator is found to be charging fees or surcharges in excess of the prescribed fare, strict action will be taken against the concerned bus operator. This may include fines, permit cancellation, and other legal action.

The Transport Department has also appealed to passengers to immediately report any complaints of overcharging on any bus. The department stated that immediate action will be taken on passenger complaints to prevent any unfair charges.

Officials note that due to increased passenger traffic during the elections, some private bus operators may attempt to exploit this situation. Therefore, monitoring has been strengthened and inspection teams have been deployed on every route.

The department also stated that ensuring a transparent and controlled fare system is its priority, ensuring no inconvenience to passengers. It is especially important to provide safe and affordable transportation to those traveling on polling day.

Overall, in view of the election atmosphere, the Transport Department has taken strict steps to stop irregularities in bus fares and has appealed to the passengers for cooperation, so that the entire system remains transparent and smooth.
