Tamil Nadu: A red alert has been issued for six districts: Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu on Saturday, November 29th (Saturday), as heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places.

The Chennai Meteorological Department issued a press release on Tuesday: The low-pressure area over the Kumari Sagar and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka intensified into a deep-deep low-pressure area on Wednesday (November 26th) morning and lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean.

It is likely to move north-northwestward and intensify into a low-pressure area on Thursday (November 27th) morning. It is likely to strengthen further over the next 48 hours, move in the same direction, and move towards the southwest Bay of Bengal and north Tamil Nadu-Puduva coasts.

Due to this, isolated light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Thursday (November 27) to December 2. In particular, isolated heavy rain is likely in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts. Consequently, a yellow warning has been issued for these districts.

A yellow alert has been issued for isolated very heavy rainfall in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Ariyalur districts due to the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.

A red alert has been issued for Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Saturday (November 29) due to the possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

On November 29, an orange alert has been issued for Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Thanjavur districts due to the possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places, and a yellow alert has been issued for Pudukkottai, Trichy, Tirupattur, Vellore, Dharmapuri, and Salem districts due to the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places.

On Thursday, Chennai will remain partly cloudy in the city. Light rain is expected in some parts of the city.

Cyclone ‘Senya’ crosses the coast: Meanwhile, the low-pressure area in the Malacca Strait intensified into a deep depression and remained over the same areas. It then moved westward and strengthened into Cyclone Senya on Wednesday (November 25) morning. After passing through the Strait of Malacca and nearby northwestern Indonesia, it moved west-southwestward and crossed the Indonesian coast. Consequently, Tamil Nadu remained unaffected.

Fishermen’s Warning: Strong winds with speeds of up to 55 kmph are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumari Sagar on Thursday.
