Tamil Nadu prison records to be digitized, minister inspects Puzhal prison

Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Energy and Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar has announced that the records of all prisons in the state will soon be fully computerized. This move aims to make prison administration more transparent, modern, and effective. The Minister conducted a detailed inspection of the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai on Sunday and reviewed the arrangements there.

During the inspection, the Minister reviewed several important facilities, including the inmate dormitories, food distribution system, food quality, and health facilities. He also inquired about the health services and medical facilities available on the prison premises and discussed with officials the procedures related to the care of prisoners.

In addition, Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar stressed the need to take strict and effective measures to prevent the illegal circulation of drugs within prisons. He also sought suggestions from officials on necessary security measures and prevention strategies to fully control this problem. He stated that discipline and security must be of utmost priority in the prison system.

The Minister also directed that the possibility of opening a shop (a canteen-like facility) within the prison be explored to ensure adequate supply of essential goods, fruits, and other essential items to the inmates. This arrangement will help better meet the basic needs of the inmates.

Speaking to the media later, Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar stated that a total of 13 prisons operate in Tamil Nadu. He stated that a detailed study of the records of convicts and undertrials in all these prisons has been conducted. This study focused on the number of inmates, their cases, and the organization of administrative records.

He also stated that during the inspection, the basic facilities available in the prisons, such as kitchen facilities, medical services, medical equipment, drinking water facilities, and other essential arrangements, were thoroughly examined. The Minister stated that the government’s aim is to bring the prison system in line with modern standards to provide better facilities and a safe environment for the inmates.

According to government sources, the process of digitizing records will increase transparency in prison administration and enable faster and secure management of prisoner information. This is also expected to speed up judicial and administrative work.

This move is considered a significant initiative towards reformative prison administration in Tamil Nadu, leading to a more modern and organized prison system in the future.
