Tamil Nadu: Orange alert for heavy rain in 6 districts today

Tamil Nadu : An orange warning of very heavy rain has been issued in 6 districts of Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore and Nilgiris on Friday (May 30).

Press release issued by the Chennai Meteorological Department on Thursday in this regard:

Due to the prevailing atmospheric circulation over the South Indian coast, moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at some places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from Friday (May 30) to June 4.

Heavy rain warning: An orange warning has been issued due to the possibility of very heavy rain at one or two places over hilly areas of Coimbatore district and Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts on Friday (May 30).

Additionally, heavy rain is likely at one or two places over Tiruppur and Dindigul districts. Moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely over Chennai and Puducherry areas on Friday (May 30).

Crossed the coast: The deep depression (cyclonic storm) over Bay of Bengal, which was slowly moving northwards, strengthened into a depression over Bay of Bengal between West Bengal and Bangladesh on Thursday morning. The cyclone moved northwards and crossed the coast between Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Keppara (Bangladesh) in the afternoon. It gradually weakened thereafter.

Rainfall: In Tamil Nadu, Avalanche in Nilgiris district recorded the highest rainfall of 190 mm till Thursday morning. Upper Bhavani (Nilgiris) – 130 mm, Chinnakallar (Coimbatore) – 120 mm, Makkinampatti (Coimbatore), Periyar (Theni), Valparai (Coimbatore) – 110 mm each, Upasi (Coimbatore) – 100 mm.

Fishermen warning: Winds up to 60 kmph are expected along and off Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, Kumari Sagar and Bay of Bengal on Friday and Saturday (30 and 31 May). Fishermen are advised not to venture into those areas for fishing.
