Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji undergoes bypass surgery

Chennai (IANS) | Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader Senthil Balaji, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), underwent a bypass surgery at the city’s Kaveri Hospital on Wednesday. DMK sources told IANS that the surgery began in the early hours.

The DMK leader was arrested in a money-for-job scam when he was the transport minister in the Jayalalithaa cabinet from 2011-16.

He later moved to DMK and is currently the Excise, Prohibition and Power Minister in the MK Stalin government.

After his arrest by the ED, the minister complained of chest pain and dizziness and was admitted to the Omandurar Multi-Specialty Hospital in Chennai.

During the check-up at Omandurar Hospital, the doctors suggested the minister to undergo a coronary angiogram.

It was found that the minister had three blocks in the coronary artery and recommended immediate bypass surgery. Senthil Balaji’s family moved the High Court to shift him to the private Kaveri Hospital.

The Madras High Court accepted the petition and Senthil Balaji was shifted to Kaveri Hospital, against which the ED moved the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam told media persons that the minister is undergoing surgery and the hospital will issue a medical bulletin on his condition.
