Tamil Nadu: Heavy rain likely for two days

Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Friday issued a yellow warning for Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats districts, including the Nilgiris and Coimbatore, for the next two days due to strong westerly winds blowing over the sea. Besides, the state has been given a wind warning that the wind speed may reach 35 kmph to 45 kmph in the coming days. The low pressure area formed over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal and the coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal is causing a change in the wind flow pattern over the sea. Heavy rain warning has been issued for the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu for the next 48 hours.

Strong winds are likely over land, with speeds reaching 35 kmph to 45 kmph. The weather department said models have predicted that the Western Ghats districts are likely to receive above normal rainfall. The rest of the state is expected to receive below normal rainfall till August 1. On the other hand, maximum temperatures in coastal and interior districts are likely to increase slightly during the day. Also, light to moderate rains are expected in Chennai and neighbouring districts during the evening or night hours in the next few days. The RMC has issued a warning to fishermen in Tamil Nadu not to venture into the sea till July 30. Squally winds with speeds of 35 kmph to 45 kmph to 55 kmph are likely over the Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area adjoining south Tamil Nadu coast.
