Tamil Nadu: Death toll due to consumption of poisonous liquor reaches 47, three accused sent to 15-day judicial custody
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Director of Medical Education Sangumani on Friday said that 47 people have died due to consumption of illicit liquor in the state’s Kallakurichi district. Besides, three accused in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor case were sent to 15-day judicial custody and taken to Cuddalore Central Prison. The Kallakurichi police produced the accused before the district combined court. According to the police, the accused have been identified as Govindaraj, Damadoran and Vijaya. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting a CBI probe into the deaths. He had earlier accused the ruling DMK government of being involved in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor death incident, alleging collusion between DMK members and local liquor vendors.
“We wish to inform your office that a similar incident that occurred in May 2023 at Marakkanam in Villupuram district and Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu had claimed the lives of 23 precious people. In his letter, he said, in the last two years, more than 60 people have lost their lives due to consumption of alcohol due to the ineffective governance of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu. He mentioned that according to his reliable sources, the production and sale of illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu is happening at the behest of party functionaries and workers associated with the DMK, where the places of sale of such liquor are located near judicial courts, police stations and other government offices. The families of the deceased in the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy claim that the sale of illicit liquor took place in major areas of the city. “It is evident that the sale of illicit liquor is happening openly with the knowledge of the local police, who work on the instructions of local political leaders associated with the DMK. He said in the letter, “Given the appalling state of governance in Tamil Nadu under the DMK rule, on behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu we request your office to order a CBI inquiry into this matter as we firmly believe that the DMK government will prevent the state police from bringing all those responsible for these deaths before the court.”
