Supreme Court Orders UPSC to Complete Telangana DGP Appointment in Four Weeks

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court has directed the UPSC to complete the appointment of a full-fledged DGP for Telangana within four weeks. It has directed the UPSC to urgently make recommendations for the appointment of DGP. It has said that the selection should be made on the basis of inter-se merit of the eligible officers in the zone of consideration. It has been given an additional four weeks to the UPSC to complete this process.

The Supreme Court said that Telangana is not alone, there are other states that have not sent proposals for the appointment of DGPs, ignoring the Prakash Singh verdict. It was of the view that the practice of appointing acting or ad hoc DGPs in place of regular DGPs has increased, and due to this, injustice is being done to qualified senior officers due to delay. It said that it is authorizing the UPSC to write to the states to send proposals on time regarding the appointment of DGPs.

The Supreme Court has ordered the UPSC to file an application in the Prakash Singh case if the states do not respond. It has warned that action will be taken against the states concerned on responsibility and accountability, if necessary. It has modified the orders given by the Telangana High Court to some extent.
