Student Murder-Rape Case in Odisha Solved; 4 Accused Arrested

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police on Sunday claimed to have solved the case involving a college student whose body was recovered on March 19 from a forest in the Dhenkanal district. The police have arrested four individuals on charges of the alleged rape and murder of the student.
The prime accused, identified as a bus driver, was the first to be apprehended. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to sexually assaulting the student and subsequently murdering her. Based on his statement, the police arrested his three accomplices, who are accused of assisting him in disposing of the body in the forest.
Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar stated that the case came to light on March 19, when the student’s body was discovered in a forested area under the Saruali police limits. The body was seized and sent for a post-mortem examination.
The police had initially detained the accused on Saturday based on suspicion. Following sustained interrogation, they allegedly admitted to their involvement in the crime. Investigators also reconstructed the sequence of events at the crime scene, during which the prime accused reportedly provided crucial leads.
On Sunday, the police reenacted the crime scene in the Saruali forest area—where the accused allegedly carried out the assault and murder, and subsequently disposed of the body with the help of others.
Officials stated that the exact cause of death would be confirmed only after the receipt of the post-mortem report.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the entire region. Although the arrests have brought some measure of relief to the student’s family and the local community, the case has once again highlighted grave concerns regarding women’s safety, particularly in rural areas.
The police stated that further investigations are underway to ensure that all aspects of the crime are thoroughly examined and that justice is served.
