Solo Art Exhibition brings alive the rock paintings of Satpura

Chennai Chennai: Witness the echoes of human history in the much-awaited solo art exhibition, “Echoes of the Past”, curated by Ruchi Athreya. This unique showcase will be held at the prestigious Lalit Kala Academy Gallery, Chennai from March 18 to March 24, 2025, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Art lovers, historians and cultural enthusiasts are invited to explore this extraordinary artistic journey that revives the prehistoric rock paintings of the Satpura region of Madhya Pradesh.

The exhibition presents a fascinating glimpse of early human expression, unearthing the timeless spirit of creativity that shaped human evolution. Each artwork provides a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors, retelling their stories etched on stone thousands of years ago. Hidden in the core areas of dense forests, these majestic prehistoric paintings are often inaccessible to common people. To bridge this gap, Aatrey meticulously recreated these mystical artefacts using textures and mixed media, giving the audience a vivid and immersive experience.

The creative force behind the exhibition, Ruchi Aatrey, was born and raised in Pachmarhi, a part of the Satpura Reserve Forest area. Her deep connection to the region has led her to extensively research and explore the ancient caves that house these prehistoric paintings. As a committed PhD scholar specialising in prehistoric rock art, Aatrey has dedicated years to documenting these fascinating visual narratives. Her unique artistic style brings her research to life, merging traditional techniques with modern artistic expression. Having exhibited her work in Dehradun and Delhi, she continues her mission to raise awareness about this rich cultural and historical heritage.

The Satpura rock paintings are the earliest known visual documentation of social and cultural life, created in an era devoid of language, structured artistic practices or established mediums. These remarkable artworks stand as profound evidence of human intelligence and creativity. Using natural pigments and primitive tools, our ancestors created paintings and paintings on the rocks.
