Sitol Pati weaver of Barak Valley, Nirmal Dey honored with Assam Gaurav Award

Cachar: In a heartfelt acknowledgment of artistic excellence, the Assam state government has unveiled its highest civilian awards – Assam Bhairab, Assam Gaurav and Assam Saurabh for the year 2023. Scheduled for a grand ceremony on February 10, a total of 22 eminent persons, including Nirmal Dey, will be honored with these honors by the Vice President and the Governor of Assam.

Sitol husband Silpi Nirmal Dey, 60, stands out as the only face of Barak Valley among the recipients. Settled in the humble village of Chipitabichia in Cachar district, Nirmal, along with his wife Rajalakshmi Dey, have been a stalwart in sustaining the sitol patti industry for many decades.

The couple, who live in a mud house, have faced many storms of life, including the tragic death of their only daughter Mridula Dey a few years ago. In the face of despair, Rajalakshmi’s resilience became the lighthouse that inspired her to continue her art and life journey.

Nirmal Dey’s journey into the art of Sitol Pati weaving began at the age of 12 under the guidance of his late father Gopal Chandra Dey. For the past 48 years, he has diligently honed this craft and turned it into a family tradition. For him, the Assam Gaurav Award is not just a recognition of his artistic prowess but a testament to the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Nirmal expressed his disbelief at receiving the highest civilian honor in the state, considering the attire he wore on this important occasion at the Raj Bhavan. Emotions ran high as he reflected on his life’s journey and the unexpected recognition of his work at the state level.

The three lakh rupees that come with the Assam Gaurav Award will be a stepping stone for Nirmal and Rajlakshmi to build a new house, which will mark an important chapter in their lives. Rajalakshmi, sitting in a corner, emphasized that her village, Chipitabichia, thrives on self-reliance, where everyone earns their livelihood through sitol patti weaving.

The couple hope that with increased government support and facilities, the sitol patti industry will gain more prominence in their area, providing sustainable livelihoods to skilled artisans in the Barak Valley and beyond. The recognition of Nirmal Dey’s extraordinary talent not only highlights the cultural richness of Assam, but also underlines the resilience and creativity that flourish in its villages.
