SHILLONG: Draupadi Murmu said- Tribal people are leaders in conservation

Shillong: The country’s first tribal President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday said tribal people have been at the forefront of environmental protection since ancient times, based on indigenous knowledge, culture and religious beliefs.
The President addressed a public meeting at the Mawphlang Sacred Grove here on Tuesday and virtually inaugurated the upgraded Rongjeng Mangsang Adokgre Road and Mairang Ranigodown Ajra Road and laid the foundation stone for the Shillong Peak Ropeway and tourist lodges at Kongthong, Mawlingot and Kudengrim villages. ,

He emphasized that tribal practices can be a good study of how symbiotic relationships can be between man and nature and said that tribal lifestyles can help in promoting national goals of bio-diversity conservation and maintaining ecological balance. Contributes.
The President highlighted the role of women in conservation and climate action efforts and said it was well documented that women are at the center of conservation efforts.

“Women in tribal societies are leading the way in sharing their knowledge and skills to protect the environment and enhance adaptation and mitigation. “By increasing women’s participation in climate initiatives and decision-making processes, more can be done for effective climate action and biodiversity conservation,” he said.
“I am happy to meet the tribal brothers and sisters of Meghalaya who have gathered here in large numbers. When I reached Meghalaya, I realized that this state is truly blessed with nature’s unique blessings. I am told that a Green Meghalaya initiative has been launched through which communities are rewarded for conserving and protecting natural cover. I have inaugurated various connectivity related and developmental projects today. I am confident that these projects will improve connectivity and enable Meghalaya to move forward on the path of sustainable and inclusive development,” he said.
“We need to ensure that our heritage is not destroyed. Therefore, we also need to document local practices for effective conservation and management. The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library is a good initiative of the Government of India to protect the traditional knowledge in medicines,” he said.

Earlier, Murmu interacted with members of self-help groups at Baljek Airport in Tura and also laid the virtual foundation stone of the new Integrated Administration Complex.
The President said that empowerment of women in social, economic, political and spiritual fields is necessary to realize the country’s dream of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
